The station opened in 1966 and is named after the former Village of Chester, which was annexed by the City of Toronto in 1909. Chester station is quiet, with ridership lower than that of other stations on the line. However, it is an integral part of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) network and serves the Greektown neighborhood.
